While the ’70s have never left our lives in one way or another (even though we weren’t even born then!), Greece’s own Baby Guru came here to remind us that we simply didn’t want to! Dolomite Jollity carries this psychedelic progress in it’s heavy intro with the British invasion leeringly laughing over the hammond and the unexpected twist in 1:26 making you wish that the funk interlude would last forever!!!! Gorgeous stuff…
Baby Guru’s much anticipated second album arrives on October 1 via Inner Ear Records and all the missing Pieces are going to stick together like a puzzle! Here is a first taste, Necessary Voodoo, with all the psychedelic flavor spreading like some kraut-ing pop mathematics of a twisted mind!!! Prepare to go deep into their crazy world….
After the solo effort of King Elephant another member of Baby Guru is following the solo way! Prins Obi just made available for streaming his first solo attempt with the beautiful ”Haze Of A Dream”. A heartbreaking love ballad, a mesmerizing british psychedelic folk song emanating and retracing its sounds and emotions from the beloved ’70s. This is a first taste from his upcoming full length coming soon!!!
Grecian wonder band Baby Guru touches Velvet Underground’s flower pop opus ”Candy Says” and the result is rather magnificent. I loved the David Bowie, Space Oddity era, touch they gave where it elevates this cover in a truly and madly captivating experience.
Baby Guru are in the works for their second album which will be out sometime this year. In the meantime you can download their cover on ”Candy Says” over at the web culture magazine Ough!.
Twenty five years ago, The Smiths, arguably the greatest British band of the 1980s, released their masterpiece, ”The Queen Is Dead”.
“Like the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen, the Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead was designed as a state-of-the-nation address. The parallels are many: explicit criticism of the monarchy as a pillar of the existing class system; the toughest hard rock as the most effective method of making your point; lyrics that are a blast of eloquent rage from the standpoint of an outsider –in each case a young man of Irish extraction. When The Queen Is Dead was released in June 1986, Britain was nearing the end of a second term of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. There was surprisingly little dissidence expressed in popular culture, as the onset of CD software inaugurated a wave of retro marketing.” John Savage, The Guardian, December 15th, 2010.
Today, this monumental album is the subject of the very first Cover Lovers exclusive tribute compilation ‘The Queen Is 25’, comprising mostly of young, Greek independent artists and bands [most of them have released their debut albums this year].
