Interview: Mascara

They made us groove with ”Stealer” and show us where the ”Empire Of Man” stands but Mascara did a hell lot more the past year. One thing is for sure, 2012 belongs to them!

While trying to find informations about you in the web, my efforts ended up hitting on a wall! You’re like a ghost! Who is Mascara???

When we first started, we used the typical ‘witch house’ symbols in the name, M△S▴C△RA. After alot of other bands started using the same symbols we thought it would be a good idea to just use the regular name, Mascara. Our goal originally was to be a ghost.True witch house was originally anonymous, it was crucial to be hard to get ahold of. Now that our music has grown we have expanded to a larger crowd and stopped wearing the capes and masks. But the best place to hear our music or research us is on www.soundcloud.com/mascara, and through interviews like this.

How would you describe your music?

The initla Mascara sound came from a noise project I did called 3 Dead Kids. Here I used classic drone sounds with long dragged out deep voices and samples. When the WH scene first came around I jumped on and started adding beats to my music. I would describe our sound as dark, electronica with a ravey feel to it. I am all about creating sounds that people can remember and lose themselves in.

I noticed that you haven’t done any remix yet! Why is that?

Actually, we have done a remix. The original track from o F F - Let u know (http://youtu.be/W34PMcfO34o) really caught my ear, so I used his vocal sample and created this beat out of it. (http://youtu.be/EAdPqVBDJR8Also, a lot more remixes are on the way ;)

Do you believe in witch house??? Or do you think it’s just a bubblegum???

I believe that when Witch House first started it was incredible. Mater Suspiria Vision, Grill Grill, White Ring. These bands being very different from each other still held the same aesthetics, dark witchy vibes. Witch House used to be scary. It was scary because no one knew where each other were from. The imagery and symbolism derived from the occult and the chance to express art through umcomfortable videos was so refreshing. I believe that there are elements of this genre still around, but WH itself has fallen by the wayside. We have taken what we learned from the genre and incorporated it into the kind of music we would want to hear at a party.

In the collabs you’ve done (Present Moment, Tense) your tunes are surprisingly different then your earliest works! Do you have any more surprises for us??

I do collabs to give a chance for other artists and us to express ourselves in different avenues. The Stealer track was a beat I was working on and sent to The Present Moment and had the song the next day. It blew my mind how amazing his lyrics were and I knew we had a solid product. The newest collab featuring //TENSE// is under the same category. I wanted to create a beat with deep beautiful vibes, but at the same time keeping it dark. Tense’s vocals on this track are meant to draw in the darker, industrial feel his band goes for. I think it turned out nicely.

What would be your dream collaboration???

I think a dream collab would be with Nic Endo from Atari Teenage Riot or Aphex Twin or someone haha. :)

What is the pick of your so far music career? Something that made you unbelievable happy…

Flying out to LA for a show and hangin with some good people :)

Writing music is better doing it sober or under the influence???

Writing music usually takes me a while. When we are working on a song, well let it marinate for a while and try and master it. But of course jammin under the influence is always a good time.

Tell me one film that you would kill you’d have writen the score??? And why…

I think Pi would be fun. Im really into the psychotic nature of that movie.

What is your worst nightmare??

Worst nightmare would be for people to forget where true electronica and rave came from.

Future plans?

Loads of releases! & EU tour and hopefully Japan. <3 ∞ <3
