Battle Ground Grammar is Seattle musician, producer and songwriter Andrew Gospe. Back in October quietly dropped his sweet debut EP BGG, a collection of tracks that moved with ease between groovy UK/garage vibes and soulful downtempo serenades. The real surprise came though with the vagapond boogie anthem Knew Back When, a wicked r&b sampledelia of pitched down vocals and tribal percussion that grows an unexpected dancefloor sensitivity inside its crazy rhythm!!!
This is a song that will light your heart in the most groovy way! The Haitian-Canadian but Paris based songstress Melissa Laveaux goes for a tropical pop meets edgy electronic folk in a bombastic shady way with Postman, an urban tangerine stray dream that sets te rhythm for somethimg special. A song that’s hidden in her newest EP, Memory Is A Strange Bell which is out now.
Wonderful second single from Los Angeles based dream pop band Satchmode. Best Intentions is an ethereal electronic pop delicacy that follows the musical path of M83 but sounds more like a half speed starlight inside CHVRCHES universe! It’s a crystalised pop volcano that bursts diamonds into the half baked night, roaring for an intimate essence of saturated warmth!!!
Stay alert for Collide EP, dropping on January 16th.
A band from Windsor, Ontario who people thought that they were from German and with only one cassette release which is dated back in 1985! The duo of Sphinxxx combined in a unique way Lebanon folk music with a hip hop beat maelstrom and a space synth odyssey, giving birth this way to a futuristic sonic experience rooted strictly in groovy patterns!!! Just like the spendid Oh Yeah which sets the mood for some exotic and bouncy tranquilizer!!! Not bad for two kids in the age of 16…..!!!!
Sphinxxx EP is available for download for the very first time and it can be yours for free by clicking here!!!
From the cool Norway comes the warmest soul music you’ll get to hear recently! Oslo based producer Sharkara delivers a classic sound from the late ’70s with the only difference that is captured and produced at the end of 2013. The sensual male, Isaac Hayes alike, vocals and the sexy blaxploited production flourishes a more than welcome adorable sound to stuck on repeat for the rest of the year!!!
Norway’s best kept secret just released a new EP and suddenly everything looks bright. Electronic producer Pandreas with the second track from Ras EP does something that could give him credits for producing one of the best tracks of the year! While Var's backbone is built in a Todd Terje alike disco fusion, the sampled in transparency vocal repetition and the trance-y synths of upbeat beauty waves the tones of Jacques Greene's most memorable moments! A stylish cohessive sound of thunderous ideas to experiment the dancefloor sonic forms in something unique and transcedent for its glorious beauty!!! Perfect!!!
Prins Obi isn’t new in the game of songwriting. His work with Greek band Baby Guru has haunted my soul in a gate of threatening forest trees many sleepless nights. Love Songs For Instant Success EP is his first solo effort and feels like a natural continuation of his band. The endless love for pure songwriting as once was happening back in the ’60s and ’70s, the disarming way that Leonard Cohen,Bob Dylan,Nick Drake and even Can used to do it while they were aiming in the heart, is gloriously unfolding in this EP. Mary Ann’s Delight is heading to face all those classic songs with pride and manages to sit somewhere between all these monsters in comfort and piece!!!
This is the first time that Chicago based producer Jeremiah Meece, one half of the production duo The-Drum and JODY, releases something under his birth name moniker. His edit on Willow Smith's Summer Fling is a sun dazed r&b delight that boils a chill out vibe of a hot and hazy summer, leading into a slow match dance under the stary night!
So stream this little gem above, visit his page here to download it for free and look for the first single of original music off of his debut solo album within the next couple of months.
Chicago based producer Evan Ireland first pulled my attention about a year ago with the splendid release of Ten Songs About The Last Six Months. He kept things quiet since then, until now. Kept EP dropped about ten days ago and from the first time i pressed play i wanted to let people hear what i hear. But time is a beach so its never too late! Nancy Knows The Truth highlights the mood and style of this promising producer, it’s like taking a long walk in your adorable but threatening city when the night falls! The house and techno inspired tribal rhythms are so melodic that you can feel the tears pouring down your face while the r&b affiliated vocal samples elevates the senses in a grey, dystopian heaven. If a match of Max Cooper meets Jacques Greene meets Shlohmo sounds good for you the you’ve just found your favorite new producer. I know i did!!!
Five guys from Athens, Greece mysteriously called Egg Hell just presented their new song from their upcoming debut LP. Ginger Head's sound is such a sweet surprise. Rooted somewhere between ’70s folk music and ’90s Radiohead-ism, the band sounds confident enough to carry all the pain and suffering in both music and voice until the end of time! A rain dropping sonic satellite that settles down in the rough ground of the uncompromising past!!!
L.A producing duo Skepp & Hawk dropped earlier today the vagabond banger of muslim beats and oriented moves that is spelled Bahlam. It’s something that you’d might expect from someone like Gaslamp Killer producing MIA ‘cause its wrapped in perfection and hedonism but this duo managed to do it even better! You can almost breath the dust that airs from the oil desert! Sweet…
Support this incredible duo and purchase Bahlamover here.
Here in Greece we used to know Last Chance as Dimitris Papaspyrpoulos, one of the most succesful radio producers hidden inside the radio waves. Now his music project Last Chance debuted The Midget EP with a little help from some friends! Having Craig Walker (remember the good old Archive days) doing the vocal duties and Keep Shelly In Athens, Serafim Tsotonis, Archive handling the remixes, the results are POPulsive!!!! Stream above KSIA's effort to tame the late night essence of The Midget with an eerie, urban raw touch and head over here to listen the whole EP.

Berlin’s most eccentric underground art pop performer Alexander Geist is back with his first poster(!) single, the amazing A Woman’s Right To Choose. His dance filled boudoir vibes of electronic pop maelstrom and the velvet like theatrical staged illuminated r&b just found the perfect ground to flourish! It’s the minimalistic artful approach and the sensual kinky groove that penetrates any defencive wall that you might have put out there and demonstrates a visionary artist with no boundaries for you to follow!!!
Stream above Alexanders soulful groove and watch below the surreal nightmare that is visionised by Imogen Heath just before you order the single.
Noble Youth's music has a familiar feeling… deconstructed! It's pop music separated in little pieces but geniusly puzzled under the unique orchestration of this young (based in the states) producer's clever eye. Nothing is an ambitious effort of James Blake's minimal autotuned black soul and Beach House's calmed folk power flying in grey skies, creating a sense of wonder and surprise from note one! It's a marriage that walks in unexpected paths but carries so much passion and brains that leaves you speachless!!!
So, it’s Saturday! Here’s a little mixtape to set your mood for the weekend with a little bit of…… everything! Hope you enjoy it!!!!!
Tracklist: Al Green - Something/Oso Gato - Pondering/Freelove Fenner - Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner/Pastel - Hold Me/Turtle - Opposite Of Low/Visioneers - Ike’s Mood/Grant Lazlo - The Traveling Man’s Tale/Rebinski - Scarecrow/Frank Ocean - Lost/Seance Center - La Chinoise/Ace Gear -Karstula/Paradise’s Deep Groove - Inner Mind/Janet - Shouldn’t
It’s almost impossible not to notice those silk, soulful dream pop melodies that Paperback emits! London based band Groves managed with only two songs to make the world raving under their tunes. The isolated but warm loneliness that Paperback processes sounds unique while there’s nothing new in there! Its soul pumped folk and the addictive groove that is so gloriously building it can only be felt like an earthquake! A smooth earthquake that you don’t understand while it’s happening but you feel the shock seconds after it finishes!
Anthony Leedom and Lien Do are two college students from San Francisco that brought them together the infinite love for music. For more than a year now they make music together as GENUIS and their debut album came in the form of .//WAV a few months ago! It’s an urban, late night pop that mixes all the right elements of sounds in one cohesive listen. Abstract jazz in avant pop style (see SF), warm hearted tropical pop simply sent in ambient waves (see Hwaiian Wdding), space folk wrapped up in minimal piano excursions (see GOlden) or even downtempo soulful noir pop that doesn’t fit in this worlds sealed limits like the wonderful Flnnal. All these conflicting influences is what makes .//WAV such a wonderful experience and GENUIS a band to look out for in 2014!!!!
Amanda Harper will finally get the attention she deserves. Along with her moniker Running In The Fog she will release on December 10th her new EP, Silver, on Father/Daughter Records and the first single from the aforementioned release is a fact! Sail concludes all her space pop alluring veins and smooth ’90s r&b vibes in a way that it is hardly, almost impossible, to meet out there. It’s like Aaliyah and Sade come in one under the production duties of Shlohmo! A slow dance revelation for the spacious minds! Brilliant!!!
Southern Californian bipolar folk(s) Kera And The Lesbians got a new song out and they’re prepping their debut album so to drop in early 2014. Gypsy Song is a psychedelic/surf blues/folk starlight with some Balkanian horns elevating the basement world gathering into a paradise circus feast while Kera's vagabond vocals violently breaking the jollification! A true nomad emotional leisure to hold and cherish!

If this isn’t a surprise then i don’t know what is!!!
Greek based psychedelic/tropical pop producer Dozen Draft rises for once again with his new song Morn Delight. An exotic affair of electrified and chaotic pop lines and figures that roars to be heard! Lost somewhere between ’70s African psychedelia and todays (?) noisy tropicalism that Animal Collective first forefronted, Morn Delight shines inside its warm psyched pop heart and gives you some tunes to be remembered!!!
Amazing new LP by Montreal based guitar pop trio Freelove Fenner. Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner LP opens with the hauntingly beautiful In The Sound and the crying forces of unfairly lost Trish Keenan and Broadcast bloom into your speakers! A raging river of ’60s orgasmic library sounds and psych pop melodies is unleashed and all the overwhelming emotions are for once again back to surface! This is an album that could climb up and be part of one of the best releases for 2013!!!
Stream In The Sound above and watch below the occult, shot in super 8 video which was made for the song and was directed by Peter Woolford, Conor Prendergast and Tessa Smith.
Dukes Of Chutney is California born and raised John Paul Jones and Dustin Lynn where along with Berlin based vocalist and performer Elle P. are set to launch a tropical bulletproof equation into the inner space of your mind! James Friley aka Idiot Glee, Auto Delta Time and Young Daniel teamed up for a new project called Janet and a physical release is on the way via Acoustic Division. Shouldn’t is the first track from the aforementioned collaboration, a twelve minute epic dancehall utopia filled with Vangelis flavored sci-fi grooves and crazy dance frenetic Giorgio Moroder affiliated synths that ends up to a wild dancefloor ride!!! Of course the surprise here is mister James Friley ‘cause i think no one out there could ever imagine that he was capable for something like this!!! Well, this is more than a happy surprise!!!
Pastel is the project of California based artist Gabriel Brenner and Hold Me is something more than just a promising track. This is what makes dark so sensual, a blues inspired night fallen r&b delight that recalls Kwabs in style and introduces a rising talent to the open minded world! Masterfully crafted inside its soulful details, it’s a song with heart that blunts pain and blood inside its irresistible dark-soul tempo!
Jenifer Jans's alter ego Bleu Roi moves in delicate ways between the eerie and dream folk/pop sounds with heartbreaking results like Bon Iver did and Daughter still do! The Switzerland based artist unleashed a month ago the gentle electronic and ecstatic unearthly pop single of Be, a song that manages to built a grandiose wall of sound with such minimal tools. Her voice is silk and smooth with an earthly tone and a fairytale tint balancing between the absolute perfection that Be delivers anyway!
Bleu Roi's debut EP Treasures is out now via Plus Plus Records.
It’s no secret that French producer Supernightmoves has touched a soft spot of mine and has become one of my few weaknesses out there! His production skills are keep growing and with Paradise Garage surpasses one more level of unbearable beauty! Twisted r&b vocal harmonies, chill out vibes of disco inferno lullabies and dirty uk/garage trapped inside a soulful tornado are the elements that makes this track a must listen! Plus it can be yours for free by clicking here.
Brighton’s Lion Bark first appeared with the song Two Prongs almost four months ago, a tropical and old fashioned baroque pop that left you wondering if Scott Walker is back in the ’60s or is just your ears fooling you! Now, a second song comes to raise the bar even higher! Longhorns is a loose crooning pop relaxant in a fast moving train, it’s a bridge between two decades of infallible taste in music placed in the same continent! It’s the melancholy of Doves colliding with the guilty innocent of The Walker Brothers in the streets of the rainy Brighton!!!
Oakland based band Trail And Ways should get credit for the best Frank Ocean cover ever made! Lost in their hands is a sensual, playful pop game built from scratch. The transition from the English language to Portuguese, the Broadcast and Stereolab influences penetrating the Bossa Nova style guitar playing and the uplifting soulful sensibilities crossing spirits with some essential dream pop aesthetics, mark this cover as one of the best songs you’ll get to listen in 2013!!!

While doing my daily music research in the usual places, i bumped into a name that caught my attention! They called A Weekend At The Feelies and they’re from Seattle! While hailing from Pearl Jam's hometown they're music is far from the town's sound aesthetic. The alternated, ethereal pop of Light works like a relaxant with its ambiance and minimal soulful vibes digging into places where you feel like you haven’t visited for a long time! The intriguing mixture of ’70s soul/pop and ’90s Cocteau Twins alike songwriting is flourishing in such great heights in Light that it will leave you speechless!!!
